I would like a variation on this where matches and games could be at player discretion but overall ranking is ladder format. In my games (tabletop miniatures) we have tournaments where players can challenge others at any time. So one player might only play 3 games during the tournament where another might play 15. But you get awarded 2 points for playing a game and an extra point (total of 3) if you win. The idea is to get people to play more games. Either way the winner is based on points total, not wins. So someone who plays 15 games and looses them all could in theory win if all other players only play a few games.

So the ability to have a sort of open ladder style where there is no seed and having the ability to track ladder position based on point total (not wins) would be important to me.

This would be nice! a ladder with no point goal, games played goal, or end date. Just pure open ended. But allow the organizer to "close it" or otherwise mark it as complete and announce winners at that point.
