'2-for-2 trade' Dodgers signs 5-year, KRW 176 billion extension contract with Glasnow
The LA Dodgers are continuing their unstoppable move in the off-season. The Dodgers' next goal, with superstar Shohei Ohtani in their arms, is to rebuild their starting lineup.
The Dodgers agreed to a five-year, $135 million (approximately 175 billion won) extension contract with right-handed fireballer Tyler Glasnow , acquired through trade.
ESPN's Jeff Passan said on the 16th (Korean time), "According to sources, the Los Angeles Dodgers are finalizing a five-year, $135 million contract with right-handed starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow. “Once the extension contract is completed, Glasnow and outfielder Manuel Margo will be officially traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to the Dodgers.”
On the 15th, American media reported the news of a trade between the Dodgers and Tampa Bay. The Dodgers made a trade to acquire Glasnow and Manuel Margo and send right-handed starting pitcher Ryan Pepiot (26) and outfielder Johnny DeLuca to Tampa Bay.
ESPN said, “This trade was contingent on Glasnow signing an extension. “On the 15th, the parties met and discussed, and Glasnow, who receives an annual salary of $25 million this year, agreed to a contract to add $110 million over four years,” he said.
Unlike Shohei Ohtani's dipper contract ($680 million out of $700 million to be paid at the end of the 10-year contract period), Glasnow's contract reportedly does not include a dipper. The media reported, “Some of the cash flow secured after Shohei Ohtani chipped in $680 million of his $700 million annual salary when signing a contract with the Dodgers could go to Glasnow.”
In 2028, the Dodgers have a $30 million annual salary option, so it could be up to $145 million. If the Dodgers decline his $30 million option for 2028, Glasnow can exercise his $20 million annual salary option. Both sides have options.
The media reported, “The Dodgers will pay Glasnow like a front-line starting pitcher in hopes he can reach his massive ceiling.” One of the more valuable starting pitchers available through trade, Glasnow is one of the most dominant pitchers. “If not for injuries, he would be considered one of the best starting pitchers in baseball,” he said.
