Will Mbappe Real rank 10th? Ballon d'Or presidential candidate to step down due to uncertainty over contract renewal
If Kylian Mbappe joins Real Madrid, there is a possibility that he will wear the ace's number 10.
Spanish media Marca reported on the 12th (Korea Standard Time), citing Modric's agent's remarks that Luka Modric (39)'s renewal of his contract with Real Madrid is still unclear.
According to media reports, Modric's agent Valdicar Remic said of the player's situation: "There is currently nothing clear about Modric's future at Real. Things will be clearer next week."
"Real Madrid is home to Modric and we will decide together what is best," he said, adding that the situation should be watched.
Ramon Alvarez, also a Marca reporter, reported on his YouTube channel on the 11th that Modric will leave Real and Mbappe will take over No. 10.
The reporter said, "It will be Modric's last season. He will turn 39 this September. He will leave to make way for other players."
He continued, "It looks like Modric will be leaving. It is clear that Real will not be re-signing, and the meeting between Modric and Florentino Perez has been postponed. It is unclear if the schedule has already been processed since then, but Modric will not remain at Real. This will be Mbappe's last season at Real Madrid."
"The timeline for future talks between Modric and President Perez has not been finalized," Marca said, adding that further progress would have to be awaited.
Real are currently preparing for the UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund at 4 a.m. on June 2 at Wembley Stadium in London after winning La Liga in the 2023-2024 season.
"After reaching the Champions League final, Modric's future will become clearer. Rumors are growing, but the reality is that everything is being postponed as mentioned earlier," the media said, adding that the news will be updated after the end of the season.
Modric transferred from Tottenham Hotspur of England to Real in the summer of 2012 for a fee of 35 million euros. Spanish media, unaware of Modric's potential at the time, pointed to him as Real's worst contractor.
However, Modric has been a regular midfielder since Real's first season. And 10 years later, he is still one of the key players in Real's midfield.
Modric scored 39 goals and 85 assists in 530 matches for Real, winning four La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey titles, five Supercopa titles, five UEFA Champions League titles, four UEFA Super Cups, and four International Football Association titles. He has won four FIFA Club World Cups. He had a brilliant career by winning 20 trophies for Real.
In addition, Modric led the Croatia national soccer team to a runner-up finish at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He won the UEFA Champions League for the third consecutive time in the tournament and won the most prestigious Ballon d'Or for a soccer player for the first time in his career.
Modric, who is already nearing 40, has been managing his physical fitness little by little since last season. He has maintained more than 30 league appearances, but his playing time has dropped below 2,000 minutes. In the 2022-2023 season, the number has dropped to 1,743 minutes in 33 games and 1,586 minutes in 30 games this season.
