This is not the first Arteta-style 'competition for the starting goalkeeper'
Coach Mikel Arteta has not hesitated to replace goalkeepers in the past.
Ramsdale was Arsenal's starting goalkeeper. Even at his age, born in 1998, he received a lot of attention for his outstanding passing and ball handling. At Arsenal, he has been in the last row since the 2021-22 season. He also kept 14 clean sheets last season, helping Arsenal rise to second place.
But things have changed this season. Arsenal brought David Raya on loan in the summer transfer window. Raya, who was the starting goalkeeper at Brentford, joined Arsenal on a permanent transfer basis.
Since a goalkeeper who had already played as a starting player in a Premier League (PL) team was brought in, fierce competition was expected. Manager Arteta said that there is no 'number one' in any position and that he brought Raya in with the plan to compete with Ramsdale. He also argued that goalkeepers, like field players, should be able to be replaced during the game.
In the end, Ramsdale was gradually pushed out of the starting lineup. After the 4th round against Manchester United, he was unable to participate in any more league games. Afterwards, Raya started in place of him, who mainly played in cup competitions, and Ramsdale was left to remain on the bench.
Ramsdale's father, Nick Ramsdale, was worried about his son. He appeared on the podcast ‘The Highbury Squad’ on the 14th (Korean time) and said, “Ramsdale has lost his smile when he was holding the ball at this moment. This is a very difficult situation. “I don’t know why this happened, but Ramsdale is optimistic and will do his best to help Arsenal win the league.”
“When Arteta spoke on the phone before he signed Ramsdale, he said he wanted Ramsdale, but when Raya came into the transfer market, he brought her in. Ramsdale signed an extension with the club before Raya arrived. “I didn’t know that Raya would join a few months later,” he expressed his doubts.
However, the same thing happened when Ramsdale joined. British media ‘Football London’ said, “Even when Ramsdale first started as a starter, he took someone else’s place. Bernd Leno is currently playing for Fulham. Leno was a regular at Arsenal before Ramsdale arrived. However, it was reported that Ramsdale’s appearance in the first three games of the 2021-22 season was over.”
Leno was also consistently playing as a starting player at Arsenal, but was immediately pushed out of his starting position when Ramsdale joined. According to the media, he said in an interview with the German media 'Bild' in September 2021, "The reason for being pushed out of the starting lineup was not clear, but it had nothing to do with my performance. “Arteta is the manager and has the power to make decisions, but it is difficult for me,” he said.
The outlet said: "This now represents two incidents where a goalkeeper has been sidelined. It appears Arteta has not specifically communicated the reasons behind the decision. Arteta has been holding out for some time before holding a press conference ahead of next week's game against Brentford. “We will take our time and take questions on this topic,” he added. https://www.totosafedb.com/
